Jose Luis Perez (63). I am an electronic engineer from Barcelona, entrepreneur and businessman. I have had several companies, developing and marketing telecommunication, location and mobility solutions. Between 1994 and 2009, when Google was not yet ubiquitous, my companies developed and sold geolocation systems for the security, emergency and transport markets, equipping around 50,000 vehicles in Spain and some European country. I was, therefore, a kind of forerunner in real-time location and tracking technologies.
I have always liked science and technology more than the business world, and I have tried to maintain a balance between them. I know what to expect from technique because I am surrounded by it and because, since I was a child, I have had a great time with it. When I enter the mathematical, or scientific field, it is when I feel good, when I am truly comfortable, and when everything is familiar to me.
Between 2007 and 2010 I sold my companies, and between 2011 and 2016 I took advantage of a kind of sabbatical years that allowed me, among other tasks, to tackle the writing of a book. It was not just about writing a book, but about carrying out an intellectual project that I had in mind for a long time: the knowledge of prime numbers. It may sound silly, but since my teens I was drawn to the surprising and sometimes dark behavior of such numbers. I took advantage of the opportunity, and immersed myself in studying number theory, increasing the depth of the books I read. This led me not only to have a good mathematical background, but also to a knowledge of the history that mathematicians had dedicated to prime numbers. I first read informative books, but I was immediately attracted by classic books written by the great masters (Edmund Landau, Godfrey H. Hardy, E. T. Titchmarsh and Aleksandar Ivić) and more modern, but prestigious (Harold M. Edwards, Carl Pomerance and Samuel J. Patterson). I also included more communicative mathematicians, such as Julian Havil, Eli Maor, Paul J. Nahin, and William Dunham, and others more in-depth, such as Richard Dedekind, Hermann Weyl, Richard Courant, and E. T. Bell in my readings. And I did not disdain, but learned a lot, from mathematicians like Marcus du Sautoy and John Derbyshire.
Faced with a world so beautiful and full of surprises it occurred to me that I could write, for amateurs and interested mathematicians, a book that contained the most attractive of the knowledge acquired. But I also wanted to support myself in the opinion of important mathematicians of the moment. I made contact with Samuel J. Patterson, at the University of Göttingen, and there I went, looking for all the knowledge stored in the manuscript department. I was able to interview Patterson, which helped me a lot in tackling the long writing task. As the Project progressed, I contacted the mathematicians Andrew Odlyzko and Brian Conrey, and in 2015 prepared two trips: one to Minnesota, where at his University I was able to interview Odlyzko, and another to California, where at the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) I interviewed Conrey. They were long talks, very enlightening, which allowed me to add a final chapter to the book with their valuable opinions (in volume 2).
In the grip of enthusiasm the book turned out to be quite extensive, but I have left it that way, publishing it in two volumes. The first volume makes a detailed introduction to the history of prime numbers, with a presentation of the mathematical tools necessary to understand the Riemann Hypothesis (Euclid, Euler, Gauss, Dirichlet and Chevyshev). The second volume introduces us fully to Riemann’s life and work, in his striking results, which never cease to amaze, and in his hypothesis, adding the final chapter with the interviews. Also, I present the life and work of many mathematicians that have worked with the Riemann’s results.
I confess that the documentation, study and writing task gave me great satisfaction, because it is not only about mathematics, but the book is impregnated with the necessary historical framework, which led me to read many biographies of mathematicians, who taught me to surround their lives and work with that historical context.
At the end of each chapter I have included abundant references from all the sources that I have used, both from mathematicians and biographers, as well as from historians or scholars. Many mathematicians parade through the pages of the book. I wanted to be precise, faithful to the story, without adding anything that might imply the least arrogance. Arrogance is forbidden in this area, and I’m just an amateur, so my opinions don’t matter much. Deep down I have worked as a chronicler, an enthusiastic observer of 23 centuries of mathematical history: the history of Number Theory and Analytical Number Theory.
As I say in the introduction to the book, I want the reader to have as much fun as I have spent writing. Thanks for your interest.

Siempre me ha gustado más la ciencia y la técnica que el mundo empresarial, y he tratado de mantener el equilibrio entre ambos. Sé qué esperar de la técnica, porque estoy rodeado de ella y porque, desde que era niño, me lo he pasado muy bien con ella. Cuando entro en el campo matemático o científico es cuando me siento bien, cuando me siento verdaderamente cómodo y cuando todo me resulta familiar.

Primero leí libros informativos, pero enseguida me atrajeron los libros clásicos, escritos por los grandes maestros (Edmund Landau, Godfrey H. Hardy, E. T. Titchmarsh y Aleksandar Ivić), y más modernos, pero también muy prestigiosos (Harold M. Edwards, Carl Pomerance y Samuel J. Patterson). También incluí matemáticos más comunicativos, como Julian Havil, Eli Maor, Paul J. Nahin y William Dunham, y otros más profundos, como Richard Dedekind, Hermann Weyl, Richard Courant y E. T. Bell en mis lecturas. Y no desdeñé, sino que aprendí mucho, de matemáticos como Marcus du Sautoy y John Derbyshire.
Ante un mundo tan bello y lleno de sorpresas se me ocurrió que podría escribir, para aficionados y matemáticos/as interesados, un libro que contuviera lo más atractivo de los conocimientos adquiridos. Pero también quería apoyarme en la opinión de importantes matemáticos del momento. Me puse en contacto con Samuel J. Patterson, de la Universidad de Gotinga, y allí me fui, buscando todo el conocimiento almacenado durante siglos en el departamento de manuscritos. Pude entrevistar a Patterson, lo que me ayudó mucho a abordar la larga tarea de escritura. A medida que avanzaba el proyecto me puse en contacto con los matemáticos Andrew Odlyzko y Brian Conrey, y en 2015 preparé dos viajes: uno a Minnesota, donde en su Universidad pude entrevistar a Odlyzko, y otro a California, donde en el American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) entrevisté a Conrey. Fueron charlas largas y tranquilas, muy enriquecedoras, que me permitieron agregar un capítulo final al libro con sus valiosas opiniones (se encuentra en el volumen 2).
En el arrebato del entusiasmo el libro resultó ser bastante extenso, pero lo dejé así, publicándolo en dos volúmenes. El primer volumen hace una introducción detallada de la historia de los números primos, con una presentación de las herramientas matemáticas necesarias para comprender la Hipótesis de Riemann (Euclides, Euler, Gauss, Dirichlet y Chebyshev). El segundo volumen nos introduce de lleno en la obra de Riemann, en sus llamativos resultados, que no dejan de sorprender, y en su hipótesis, añadiendo el capítulo final con las entrevistas. Además, presento la vida y obra de muchos matemáticos que han trabajado con los resultados de Riemann.
Confieso que la tarea de documentación, estudio y redacción, muy larga, me dio una gran satisfacción, porque no se trata solo de matemáticas, sino que el libro está impregnado del marco histórico necesario de cada época, lo que me llevó a leer muchas biografías de matemáticos, que me ayudaron a enmarcar su vida y trabajo en el contexto histórico.
Al final de cada capítulo he incluido abundantes referencias de todas las fuentes que he utilizado, tanto de matemáticos y biógrafos, como de historiadores y eruditos. Muchos matemáticos desfilan por las páginas del libro. Quería ser preciso, fiel a la historia, sin añadir nada que pudiera implicar la menor arrogancia. La arrogancia está prohibida en este área, y yo solo soy un aficionado, así que mis opiniones no importan mucho. En el fondo he trabajado como cronista, observador entusiasta de 23 siglos de historia matemática: la historia de la Teoría de Números y la Teoría Analítica de Números.
Como digo en la introducción del libro, quiero que el lector/a se divierta tanto como yo al escribirlo. Gracias por su interés.
